The inside of your house being humid can be very uncomfortable but that’s not the only reason you should be concerned about it. A more humid home is the ideal environment for harmful microbes and dust mites. Mold also thrives in moist, humid places and since mold can not only do major damage to your home but also make you become very ill and possibly even kill you, you’ll want to do your best to prevent mold from forming. You will probably feel when your house is extremely humid but a telltale sign that your house is too humid, besides mold growing, is condensation on the windows. If you see this, you should begin to dehumidify your home. Obviously, a dehumidifier is ideal for this. However, if you can’t afford it or simply don’t want to buy one, you can use these tips to help dehumidify your home.
Vent Your Home
This is something simple that can greatly reduce the humidity levels in your home. Just open your windows and doors to increase the airflow through your home and place fans in front of the windows and doors to help accelerate this process. If you have extraction fans, they are perfect for getting rid of humidity. They’re usually in bathrooms and kitchens but another good place for them is the attic as attics are very susceptible to humidity and mold.
Get Rid of Indoor Plants
Plants give off moisture into the air, which will increase the humidity levels. Moving your plants outside will help get rid of some of the humidity. If you really want to have plants in your home, then you can get some plastic plants which won’t affect the humidity at all.
Shorter Showers
Taking a long, hot shower can be very soothing and relaxing but it is a major culprit of increasing the humidity level in homes. Showers release a lot of moisture into the air. Shortening your shower length will lower the amount of moisture going into the air. Make sure you have your extraction fan running whenever you take a shower and leave the bathroom door open so the air can be filtered.
Use Dry Heat Sources
Gas heat is a great way to warm up your home at a fairly low cost but it can raise the humidity levels. Instead of using your gas heater, a space heater does a great job of heating up your house while drying the air, lowering the humidity level.
A little bit of humidity in homes is important and helpful so don’t overdo it with these dehumidifying techniques. Try to keep your home’s humidity at levels between 30-50%.
