Fireplace Mantel Styling
Fireplace mantels were originally used in medieval times as a projected hood over the fire grate to catch the smoke emitted. Over time, they have evolved to include the framework that sits around the fireplace. While many people stick to placing their family photos on display on their mantles, here are a few new ideas to style your mantle.
-
Large artwork
An easy way to dress up a mantel is by using a large piece of artwork. Try to make the piece at least 2/3 the size of the mantel. If you are hanging up the art, be sure not to go too high. A few inches above the mantel is perfect, but if you go too high, it looks disjointed from the piece.
-
Clustered
A clustered wall uses many different, smaller pieces to create one statement. If you don’t want to get a large piece of artwork, but still want to incorporate art, this might be a good way to go.
-
Mirrors
Mirrors are a great item to add to your mantel. Not only can they be a great design piece, but they can make a small space seem larger. However, mirrors work better with lower mantels, such as French mantels. Taller mantels, such as English mantels, would leave you only being able to see the top of your head.
-
Structure
Anything structural can make for a visually appealing mantel. You can keep it simple with candles and vases, or go for something fancier with other structural pieces.
-
Wallpaper
If you want to keep your mantel simple, consider placing a sheet of wallpaper above the mantel to create a visual pop instead of adding items on top of the mantel.
-
What to avoid
When styling a fireplace mantle, it’s good to know what you shouldn’t use in addition to what you should. Avoid flowers or paper products if you have a shallow or low mantel as they will be too close to the heat source.
-
Play with light
Sconce lights can make for a beautiful mantle. You can use them by themselves or use them to frame any hung artwork. If you have a deep mantle, consider adding candles to your mantel.
-
Relaxed
To create a more laid-back feel to your mantel, consider hanging a television above your mantle. This works well for any room of your house but can be especially great for a bedroom or den room.
