October is in full swing. Before the weather gets too cold, here’s a few home maintenance things you should do before winter sets in.
-
Replace your HVAC system
The HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system’s filter needs to be replaced every one to three months. This is done to keep the air in your home clean and flowing freely. For the best results, use a high-quality air filter. High-quality air filters remove mold, pollen, and other microscopic particles from the air.
-
Install or close storm windows
In colder climates, storm windows on a single pane glass can reduce heat loss by 25% to 50%. It can also lower heating costs by as much as 13%. If your home already has storm windows, October is the perfect time to clean and close them. Removable screens can be taken down, scrubbed, and put away until springtime.
-
Check weather stripping and thresholds
Weather stripping around doors and the threshold seal at the bottom of doors can easily wear out over time. Replace damaged weather stripping of thresholds can make a difference in energy efficiency.
-
Caulk cracks and gaps in siding
Small cracks in your home’s siding can do big damage to your heating bill in the winter. Check your siding around your windows, doors, and vents for any cracks or gaps and fill them in.
-
Clean gutters and downspouts
Clogged or leaking gutters can easily overflow, causing water damage to your home. Clean out your gutters and then use a garden hose to ensure they are draining properly.
-
Rake leaves
Start raking your leaves. Placing them onto a plastic tarp makes for easy clean-up! After you’re done, bag the leaves up or places them in a compost pile.
-
Trim dead tree branches
Dead tree limbs are likely to fall in the winter. Cut them now to prevent a potential safety hazard.
-
Maintain your fireplace
Have your fireplace serviced before the first fire of the season! Schedule an appointment to have your chimney inspected and cleaned.
