Despite linens and mattress pads, mattresses get dirty. Mattress can attract crumbs, sweat, and so many other gross things. To keep your mattress fresh, you’ll need to clean it periodically. And it’s easier than you may think.
-
Vacuum
If you have a mattress cover, remove it. After removing it, run a vacuum over the mattress to get rid of any crumbs, dirt, hair, or dust that has accumulated over time. This will give you a slightly cleaner canvas to get a deeper clean on.
-
Spot Clean
What kind of stain you are dealing with will determine how you are going to clean. Unless you recently spilled coffee, chances are that the stains are bodily ones, such as sweat or blood, and they probably aren’t new. This makes it more difficult to remove them as they have chemically bonded with the fabric. There are multiple different ways that you can treat stains. Try using a combination of hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, and baking soda in a spray bottle or mixing together lemon juice and salt and applying it to the stain to break it down. Different stains may need to be treated differently.
-
Deodorize
Spread a light layer of baking soda over the surface of the mattress and let it sit for a couple of hours. The baking soda will absorb any excess liquids from the stain removal process. Additionally, it will leave your mattress smelling fresh and clean. Afterward, vacuum off the baking soda. Make sure you get into any fold or crevices of the mattress to remove all the powder.
-
Air it out
This is more of an “if you can” rather than a necessary step to clean your mattress. If you are able to, bring your mattress outside for some fresh air and sunlight. Doing so is a great way to naturally get rid of any bacteria that may be in your mattress.

Cover and protect
If you don’t currently have a mattress cover, get one now. They protect against future stains and can be easily cleaned on a regular basis by a washing machine!
